Book illustrations: Often small-sized pieces of art on paper that relate somehow to a written text.
Instead of sticking to that format, Felix Gephart and Dominik Hebestreit decided to paint book-related illustrations on walls.
Both agreed upon the “Baron Muenchhausen” from August Buerger, a tale that has been illustrated numerous times, way back also by Gustave Dore.
When composing the sketches for murals, Felix often alienates parts from the text and visualizes the motivs of its characters, often mixed with a good portion of irony.
Both artists transform the drawings by eyeballing on the wall. Being notorious believers in study and craft, Felix and Dominik refuse tools like rulers, copy machine, photography or projector, which gives them more freedom in terms of motiv choice, perspective and final execution.

I’m an Icelandic illustrator and visual artist who studied multimedia illustration and animation in Italy, after finishing my studies in general arts and design in Iceland. I’m now working and living in Brighton, UK.

My passion for art is probably as old as I am since my parents always encouraged me to draw and to look at things around me with a critical mind. I loved picture books as soon as I was strong enough to hold them. I remember smelling the pages, making up new stories for the characters and falling asleep with them covering my face so I could carry on dreaming the storyline.
I still have this need to animate and make up stories for pencil lines and shapes on paper. Whether be it an illustrated book I’m working on or just a single doodle, I’m always waiting for the characters to talk to me, tell me their story and eventually leave my desk so I can start over again. The fact that I can create “life” and inspire new thoughts for the audience, just through my visual creation is a priority that to me is beyond understanding.

Growing up in an isolated country like Iceland forces people also to think about society, life and humanity vs. nature in a specific way. We have to learn how to embrace the beauty in something that usually would be considered ugly. We listen to sound in the silence, see colors in grey and understand that part of living is dyeing. These contrasts fascinates me, I love the fact that things that make us smile can also make us cry and that we can feel warm and cold at the same time. This combination of irony and humor that makes me both laugh and be scared is usually underlying in my work and I can easily connect it to my childhood, or to everyone’s childhood for that matter. We all love the bad guy just as much as the good guy in our fairytales. I need the ugly in my work to appreciate the beauty.

You can find my work in several places online, www.erlamaria.com is my personal portfolio and I would recommend to everybody to have a look at www.artsprojekt.com. It‘s a fantastic collection of amazing artists and there you can also buy some of my works and products.

Cologne, October 6th 2009 – There’s a new arrival in Cologne’s design family: CONTAIN Gallery selected design editions is Cologne’s first gallery focused on young international design. From now on there is a place in the heart of Cologne’s creative Belgian Quarter for exhibitions from the progressive world of young design.

The opening exhibition “Utopie jetzt! / utopia now!“ deals with the utopian idea of an allegedly refined society – contradicted by a cross-section of modern urban lifestyle.

A forum for young and modern design – this is CONTAIN Gallery’s mission statement. Alternating topical exhibitions present international up-and-coming artists and their exclusive prototypes, progressive design concepts and limited editions. Carefully selected pieces will also be available in the Gallery Shop.

A lasting experience – The first and foremost idea at CONTAIN Gallery’s inception was to create a location for creative encounters and exchanges.
Gallery owner Ioanna Paraskeva was formerly responsible for PR & Communications at www.DESIGNSPOTTER.com – Europe’s biggest online design portal. For over three years she collected international contacts as well as gained a lot of experience in the world of design and exhibitions. Under the DESIGNSPOTTER label she organized three major trade exhibitions at the international furniture fair imm cologne and recently communicated with 52 young international artists.

A step back is a step forward – Digitally dealing with design on a day-to-day basis led to her desire to give design talents and their products an opportunity to become permanently touchable and come alive in sophisticated surroundings. She took a conscious leap from a breathless digital world right into the decelerated, clear spaces in Cologne’s Aachener Str 29.

„Utopie jetzt! / utopia now!“ – The current exhibition’s theme is reflected in the creations of young international designers. Utopia is an idea of an allegedly refined society – contradicted by a cross-section of modern urban lifestyle and it occasionally collides with a constantly growing examination of one’s sensitivities and responsibilities.

The scope of exhibited products reaches from Barcelona to Bulgaria, from vehement weapons to enlightened surveillance. What these products have in common are the juxtapositioning of realities. Manga figurines in golden and platinum hand-painted porcelain clothes; a super-sized Kalashnikov in admonishing red; a floor lamp with surveillance cameras as shiners.

All these and lots of other exciting designs formulate an international interpretation of meaning, value and use. Objects and their meta-concepts float free, sometimes provocatively, sometimes ironically. In any case they animate the viewer to give some thought to own ideas on how to improve the world we live in.

A matchbox is the place / the receptacle for the book where takes place a story, folded in accordion (Leporello).
This new way of inscription, which was thought and created by Richard Meier finds here a new public. The various collections are co-directed and widened by Sophie Meier / Cosyworks in Pau. Today the collection presents 64 book boxes and artists.
they are, as in the Antic Greece, like some Circumstances poems, adapted to various situations. “When you look at it, it‘s an object that can be left on a table, and it looks like haïkus“, those little japanese poems.“ There may be a hundred before the end of the year.

Sophie Meier invites artist from the young creation: designers, photographers, graphic designers, stylists… and is always looking for young talents.
“I really like to discover the works of the artists. It‘s always a surprise to see what they can imagine for that little matchbox space. It‘s not that easy to work with this size, and it‘s often new for them. I also love that Leporello size. Discovering the works in an accordion way is
also a surprise.“

The Matchboox have been introduced during various exhibition in Bordeaux / France, Nimes, Amsterdam, Paris, Metz (Petit Pompidou)
The collection presents various artists such as :

Bernard Heidseick, Patrick Loste, Georges Ayats, Mario Chichorro, Hubert Lucot, Claude
