This book is a photographic showcase about the vision of night photography. The selection of participants was curated by Andres Medina and Mikel Aramendia, promoters of this book, and partially comes motivated by the positive experience in the Flickr group Midnight Photo Addict.

A Visual History of Typefaces and Graphic Styles

This book offers a novel overview of typeface design, exploring the most beautiful and remarkable examples of font catalogs from the history of publishing, with a special emphasis on the period from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century, when color catalogs were at their height. Taken from a Dutch collection, this exuberant selection traverses the evolution of the printed letter in all its various incarnations via exquisitely designed catalogs displaying not only type specimens in roman, italic, bold, semi-bold, narrow, and broad, but also characters, borders, ornaments, initial letters and decorations as well as often spectacular examples of the use of the letters. The Victorian fonts, sumptuous and sometimes unbelievably outrageous, are accorded a prominent place in this book. In addition to lead letters, examples from lithography and letters by window-dressers, inscription carvers, and calligraphers are also displayed and described.

Featuring works by type designers including: William Caslon, Fritz Helmuth Ehmcke, Peter Behrens, Rudolf Koch, Eric Gill, Jan van Krimpen, Paul Renner, Jan Tschichold, A. M. Cassandre, Aldo Novarese, Adrian Frutiger

In order to include a vast amount of material, we have divided this text into two volumes. The first volume displays pre 20th Century type specimens, and the second covers the period from 1900 to the middle of the century. In the first volume, editor Cees de Jong and collector Jan Tholenaar write about single specimens and types; in the second, Alston Purvis outlines the history of types.

About the Author
Cees W. de Jong is a designer and publisher based in Laren, the Netherlands. He has published numerous books on design, architecture and art, and is now working as a design/publishing consultant and author. He has also published many books on graphic design. Alston W. Purvis is professor of the visual arts division of the School of Arts at Boston University, USA. He is also the author on many books on graphic design. Jan Tholenaar is collector of the printed letter in all various incarnations through exquisite design catalogs and specimen books. He lives in Amsterdam.

About the Author:
Martin Dawber is the Principal Lecturer in Fashion at the Liverpool John Moores University where he has taught for the last 25 years. He is also a practicing designer and has had his work exhibited in France and Finland. Dawber has a Master’s Degree from the Royal College of Art, specializing in Fashion Design, and is the author of New Fashion Illustration and the Big Book of Fashion Illustration.

3 Minutes, the second publication from DAHRA

3 Minutes is the second publication from non-profit organisation Designers Against Human Rights Abuse (DAHRA) and the second collaboration between DAHRA and Tibet Relief Fund.

The premise of the book is to show the full extent of the Tibetan conflict through 10 diverse and extremely powerful 3-minute interviews, each describing the 3 minutes that changed their lives. This idea is reflected in the covers of each booklet, which separately make beautiful abstract covers but together form to make a ‘3’.

Contributors were asked to translate these minute interviews into 16 printed page booklets using primarily typography. The result is a book made up of 10 beautifully designed booklets from some of the world’s best designers showcasing considered and stunning typography.

The book is available for £10 + p&p worldwide with all proceeds going to Tibet Relief Fund and being distributed by Subism.

THE MATCHBOOX

A matchbox is the place / the receptacle for the book where takes place a story, folded in accordion (Leporello).
This new way of inscription, which was thought and created by Richard Meier finds here a new public. The various collections are co-directed and widened by Sophie Meier / Cosyworks in Pau. Today the collection presents 64 book boxes and artists.
they are, as in the Antic Greece, like some Circumstances poems, adapted to various situations. “When you look at it, it‘s an object that can be left on a table, and it looks like haïkus“, those little japanese poems.“ There may be a hundred before the end of the year.

Sophie Meier invites artist from the young creation: designers, photographers, graphic designers, stylists… and is always looking for young talents.
“I really like to discover the works of the artists. It‘s always a surprise to see what they can imagine for that little matchbox space. It‘s not that easy to work with this size, and it‘s often new for them. I also love that Leporello size. Discovering the works in an accordion way is
also a surprise.“

The Matchboox have been introduced during various exhibition in Bordeaux / France, Nimes, Amsterdam, Paris, Metz (Petit Pompidou)
