Modern balloons can be made from materials such as rubber, latex, polychloroprene, or a nylon fabric, while some early balloons were sometimes made of dried animal bladders. Some balloons are purely decorative, while others are used for specific purposes such asmeteorology, medical treatment, military defense, or transportation. A balloon’s properties, including its low density and relatively low cost, have led to a wide range of applications.

I’m an Icelandic illustrator and visual artist who studied multimedia illustration and animation in Italy, after finishing my studies in general arts and design in Iceland. I’m now working and living in Brighton, UK.

My passion for art is probably as old as I am since my parents always encouraged me to draw and to look at things around me with a critical mind. I loved picture books as soon as I was strong enough to hold them. I remember smelling the pages, making up new stories for the characters and falling asleep with them covering my face so I could carry on dreaming the storyline.
I still have this need to animate and make up stories for pencil lines and shapes on paper. Whether be it an illustrated book I’m working on or just a single doodle, I’m always waiting for the characters to talk to me, tell me their story and eventually leave my desk so I can start over again. The fact that I can create “life” and inspire new thoughts for the audience, just through my visual creation is a priority that to me is beyond understanding.

Growing up in an isolated country like Iceland forces people also to think about society, life and humanity vs. nature in a specific way. We have to learn how to embrace the beauty in something that usually would be considered ugly. We listen to sound in the silence, see colors in grey and understand that part of living is dyeing. These contrasts fascinates me, I love the fact that things that make us smile can also make us cry and that we can feel warm and cold at the same time. This combination of irony and humor that makes me both laugh and be scared is usually underlying in my work and I can easily connect it to my childhood, or to everyone’s childhood for that matter. We all love the bad guy just as much as the good guy in our fairytales. I need the ugly in my work to appreciate the beauty.

You can find my work in several places online, www.erlamaria.com is my personal portfolio and I would recommend to everybody to have a look at www.artsprojekt.com.

Gephart draws inspiration from fantastic realism, satiric imagery, culture jamming, asian ink-painting, Pop Art and Graffiti. His text-inspired works focus on the hidden motifs of his characters, but also sample the pleasure of tragic humor as a consequence of human adaption and mainstream.
Felix Gephart received a Fulbright grant and graduated with an MFA from the School of Visual Arts in New York.

His work has been internationally featured amongst others by Novum, DIE ZEIT, Illusive, Graphische Kunst, Empty magazine, Dpi magazine, Playboy magazine and Esquire magazine. In October 2009, 80 drawings were shown on the occasion of his solo show at the A. Paul Weber Museum, Ratzeburg.

Illustration, painting and graphic design get fused in spontaneous,
chaotic and strident way to wake up us from a sedative and superficial
world. Textures and colors wrap us in the visual saturation commonly
used to dazzle, creating dreams, desires and insecurity.

Junichi Tsuneoka was born and raised in Japan and, upon graduating Waseda University in Tokyo, arrived in the US at the end of the 20th Century. After five years as a graphic designer, Junichi established a style often recognized as “California Roll Stylie,” the result of both a visual and conceptual fusion of Japanese pop culture and American urban culture. He founded STUDIO STUBBORN SIDEBURN to broaden his visual communication and to employ his visual language in art, illustration, and design. Junichi’s pieces possess highly communicative, assertive graphics, and contain clear signs pointing back to his strong design background. STUBBORN SIDEBURN has worked for national and international clients and the works has published internationally. STUBBORN SIDEBURN is still expanding it’s possibility and trying new way of expression but the roots is simple, strong and graphic, the source is always from the character design approach.

I’m a freelance illustrator and a graphic designer, law graduated by chance. I live in Padova, Italy, and I have spent most part of my life drawing and loving arts. My illustrations always start from a picture and a certain mood. I am not quite sure what I’m doing when I start to draw until the artwork is finally completed – for me this is the only way to be direct.
